Exploring Tomorrow’s Grid

At PJM Interconnection, we work with member companies, innovators, research and academic institutions, and industry experts to advance the transmission grid and strengthen the power supply infrastructure of our region.

Through initiatives that pilot aspects of tomorrow’s grid, we explore and apply Smart Grid concepts such as Synchro Phasor (PDF) technology, electricity storage (PDF), compressed air energy storage, plug-in hybrid electric vehicles (PDF), ice cooling and flywheel technologies. We also engage in activities that support the concept of price-responsive demand (PDF), explained here in a news release on a related symposium and demand response (PDF).

For example, with the help of $27.8 million in stimulus funding from the U.S. Department of Energy, PJM and 12 member companies are implementing a plan to install 90 Phasor Measurement Units across our region. The project enables near instantaneous transfer of detailed system information that can signal developing problems in the grid.

These and other efforts support PJM’s vision to be the electric industry leader — today and tomorrow — in reliable operations, efficient wholesale markets and infrastructure planning.
